Volunteers & Tutors

BECOME AN ADULT EDUCATION VOLUNTEER, TUTOR NOW!

Volunteers play an important role in providing educational services to adult learners.

Dozens of literacy programs in Philadelphia rely on volunteer tutors to make a difference in the lives of adult learners. Your volunteer contribution supports our mission to ensure that all Philadelphians have access to high-quality education leading to personal and career advancement, and increased economic and social opportunity.

The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one our FREE Tutor Now volunteer trainings (no teaching experience required).

If you do have teaching experience in K-12 education settings, this training will draw on your existing knowledge and help you to prepare to work with adult learners in adult basic education and English as a Second Language.

After completion of the training, adult education tutors are placed in adult education partner programs across the City to work and support adult learners.

The Volunteer Tutor Trainings are offered in two formats: blended and online. The blended format mixes traditional face-to-face classroom workshops with self-paced online modules. The online format follows a self-paced, instructor-facilitated (someone is there to help you along the way), cohort-based model (you are not alone in the class; you have an opportunity to interact and learn from your classmates).

The Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning training provides tutors with basic skills and strategies for tutoring adult learners. It is designed to ensure that tutors are not only teaching adult basic education skills (Reading, Writing and Numeracy) but also incorporating fundamental skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century workplace. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

Online Training.
The online format allows volunteers complete the work online at their own pace within the three-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.
