The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy and local adult education providers gathered at City Hall on the evening of April 10, 2014 to recognize and celebrate adult literacy volunteers in Philadelphia who invest their time and talents by helping adult learners around the city.
Volunteers were greeted with gift bags that included free volunteer passes to cultural institutions in the greater Philadelphia region, a flash drive of resources that volunteers can use with learners, a 50th anniversary Commemorative CD songs from The Sound of Philadelphia catalog, Visit Philadelphia swag, and other goodies.
Volunteers from the following agencies participated: Action Harvest, Center for Literacy, Christian Church of Divine Truth, Inc., Community Learning Center, Congreso de Latinos Unidos, DCAA, District 1199c Training and Upgrading Fund, Honickman Learning Center, IHM Literacy Center, Ingerman Management Company, Lutheran Settlement House, Majid Muhammad, Mercy Neighborhood Ministries, People’s Emergency Center, Philadelphia Fight, Temple University-CSPCD, Temple University-WELL, The School District of Philadelphia, U.S. Department of Labor and the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians.
Encouraging words from Commission Executive Director, Dr. Judith Rényi, and Interim Commission Chair, Leslie Stiles set the tone for a wonderful evening. Also in attendance were adult education students Brian Davis, Bory Kuoch and Sheila Williams-Brown who have benefited from the help of tutors while pursing their GEDs. Brian, Bory and Sheila, who are each doing well in their respective professional pursuits, are proof that investing in adult education pays off.
Thank you to all attendees and supporters who participated in this special evening.
