The Commission Now Accepting Applications for Free Access to IBM’s Reading Companion Software

31 October 2014
News

Reading Companion is IBM’s web-based literacy grant initiative that uses voice recognition technology to help adults learn how to read. Developed by IBM researchers working in partnership with schools and not-for-profit organizations, Reading Companion is an effective and easy-to-use technology that assists individuals as they learn to read. This innovative software ‘listens’ and provides feedback, enabling emerging readers to practice reading and their English pronunciation as they acquire fundamental reading skills.

Since the Reading Companion software is available through the Web, learners can access it anytime and anywhere. Once students sign in with their own ID and password, the software resumes where the student left off reading and continues to update the student’s reading results. You can read more about Reading Companion here.

The Commission offers Reading Companion licenses for qualifying non-profit adult education providers at no cost. Interested agencies are invited to request for licenses through the Commission. Once agencies are approved, representatives will attend an informative, “hands-on” training to learn how to use the software.

To acquire a free software license, agencies must complete the following forms and submit them to Catherine Freimiller, freimillerc@freelibrary.org no later than November 24, 2014:

If agencies have additional questions about Reading Companion, please contact The Commission at (215) 686-5250.
