Anne Gemmell
Director of Family Learning

Anne Gemmell is the Director of Family Learning in the Office of Adult Education. Family Learning will be piloted in Philadelphia in early 2017. Anne is a longtime advocate for Philadelphia’s children. She has combined policy expertise and political organizing experience in work on education, state and local budgets, economic inequality and early childhood education.

In January 2016, she joined the Kenney administration to help launch the PHL PreK initiative. From 2013 to 2016, she worked as the Southeast PA Field Director with Pre-K for PA statewide advocacy campaign. Anne was the local Political Director for the Fight for a Fair Economy coalition, locally known as Fight for Philly. In 2007, she co-founded Education Voters PA, a statewide K-12 education policy and advocacy organization.

Anne is a former high school Social Studies teacher with the School District of Philadelphia and Mastery Charter. In 1997, she was a Pennsylvania selection for the James Madison Fellowship (1999) and holds a Master of Arts degree in American History from Villanova University.

The Family Learning project provides the tools adults need to be involved in their children’s education, get better jobs and be more engaged in their own neighborhoods. In addition to gaining skills to help their children succeed in and outside the classroom, parents also build important technology, language literacy and job skills. Research shows that strong family support helps children and parents thrive in school and life.
