On Monday, February 23rd ,The Philadelphia Adult Literacy Alliance convened for their quarterly meeting. The meeting focused on creating a pipeline for adult learners to college and featured guest speaker, Dr. Donald Generals, President of the Community College of Philadelphia. Dr. Generals discussed the importance of a unified, citywide approach to adult learning and the programs and services offered by the Community College of Philadelphia that support adult learners in a successful transition to college.

DSCN2336An educator and seasoned researcher, Dr. Generals is an expert on the roots of the progressive education movement in America. Dr. Donald Generals, a resourceful administrator and recognized advocate for community colleges, is the sixth President of Community College of Philadelphia. He began his tenure on July 1, 2014.

Dr. Generals stressed the importance of using adult learners’ strengths in teaching and connecting lessons to topic matter relevant to the learner and their desired career.  He stated, “We can’t teach literacy in isolation of the whole learner, their whole experience.” According to Dr. Generals, the curriculum for adult education should be developed around empowering the learner. He spoke of how assessments should identify strengths, not only weaknesses, and that many current assessments only test basic skills like reading, writing, and math and ignore important work-ready skills. In addition, Dr. Generals introduced his plan for the Community College of Philadelphia to become a premiere center for adult education.

DSCN2341After Dr. Generals addressed the Alliance, members broke up into groups to discuss critical questions on increasing adult learner’s chances for success before and during college.  The meeting closed with announcements, networking and lunch.

A special thanks to Dr. Donald Generals and the Community College of Philadelphia for joining us and continuing to support adult learners in Philadelphia. Please join the Alliance for the Literacy Salon- Research Projects: Metrics as a Tool and Data as a Strategy on Friday, February 27th from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.
