Literacy Salon Discusses Policy and Advocacy for Adult Education

Literacy Salon 9.19.14

Adult educators and advocates gathered at the Free Library of Philadelphia for a monthly Literacy Salon on Friday, September 19th. The session was led by Stephanie Korber, Director of Education at the Center for Literacy, Regional Representative of Pennsylvania Association for Adult Continuing Education (PAACE), and member of the advisory board of the Philadelphia Adult Literacy Alliance.

Ms. Korber began the Salon with a presentation on how to be an effective advocate in the community and in influencing policy. Participants split into groups to brainstorm what tools would help them become better advocates, and to share what made them successful in past advocacy efforts. The session also reviewed the recently passed Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and how the bipartisan, bicameral legislation can affect adult education nationwide.
