Introducing Tutor Now

13 July 2017

The Office of Adult Education is excited to announce Tutor Now, an updated Volunteer Training Program to better equip volunteer tutors of adult education with the skills, tools and resources to provide quality education to Philadelphia’s adult learners.

Since 1983 the Office of Adult Education (formerly the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy) has worked to support adult education programming, educators and volunteers in the City of Philadelphia. One way OAE supports these efforts is by recruiting, training and placing volunteers in adult education programs across the City. Tutor Now will continue to ensure volunteers are prepared to work one-on-one or in class settings.

Volunteers play an important role in providing educational services to adult learners.  Your volunteer contribution supports the Office of Adult Education mission to ensure that all Philadelphians have access to high-quality education leading to personal and career advancement, and increased economic and social opportunity.

If you are 18 years of age or older with at least a High School or Equivalency Diploma, we invite you to consider becoming a volunteer tutor.  The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one of the FREE tutor trainings offered by the Office of Adult Education.  The training is open to everyone – no teaching experience required!  For volunteers who may have teaching experience from K-12 education settings, this training will draw on your existing knowledge and help you prepare to work with adult learners in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language.

Tutor Now trainings are available in both blended and online formats. The blended training mixes traditional face-to-face classroom facilitated workshops with self-paced online modules. The online training allows volunteers to complete the work online at their own pace within the class period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, and support.

The following Tutor Now training are available:

Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning

The Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning training provides tutors with basic skills and strategies for tutoring adult learners. It is designed to ensure that tutors are not only teaching adult basic education skills (Reading, Writing and Numeracy) but also incorporating fundamental skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century workplace such as digital literacy skills.

Tutor Now, English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Tutor Now, English as a Second Language (ESL) training covers theory and techniques to work with adults who are learning English as an additional language.

Tutor Now,  GED® / HiSET® Prep

The Tutor Now,  GED® / HiSET® Prep training offer tutors the skills to help students achieve success in passing the GED® or HiSET® exams to obtain their Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD). The training provides specific information regarding the tests, tools to help students organize information to effectively answer test questions and tools to help learners develop and use testing skills strategically to maximize outcomes.

Tutor Now, Technology Skills

The Tutor Now, Technology Skills training is designed for volunteers that are interested in bridging the digital divide through education. Volunteers will be equipped with an understanding of adult learning theory as well as strategies for improving technology skills of adults.  After completion, trained tutors are placed at KEYSPOT open access computing labs and adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

After completion of the training, tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia. Tech Skills Tutors can also be placed at KEYSPOT, open access computing labs across the city.

Please note Mentor Training will no longer be offered as a volunteer training course. Mentor Training will now be available for tutors as a professional development opportunity. It will be offered 4 times a year.
