The Neuroscience of Learning: Memories Are Made through the Malleability of the Brain

The brain is built for learning because its structure is malleable to incoming information and experiences. The process of acquiring new knowledge and skills results when anatomical and chemical changes occur between neurons in the brain because of memories being formed. Creating memories, which are the concrete trace of the learning process that is left in neural networks, involve a delicate process of encoding, and synaptic and system consolidation. Neuroscientists have identified many factors that can influence the formation of memories. This keynote presentation will explain these recent advances and how educators can utilize these insights to build memory capacities of their students to enhance learning.
