Help adults in your community finish their diploma!

Volunteers play an important role in providing educational services to adult learners. Your volunteer contribution supports the Office of Adult Education mission to ensure that all Philadelphians have access to high-quality education leading to personal and career advancement, and increased economic and social opportunity.

The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one of the FREE tutor trainings offered by the Office of Adult Education. The training is open to everyone – no teaching experience required!  For volunteers who may have teaching experience from K-12 education settings, this training will draw on your existing knowledge and help you prepare to work with adult learners in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language.

Description
Tutor Now: GED® and HiSET® Prep training offer tutors the skills to help students achieve success in passing the GED® or HiSET® exams to obtain their Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD). The training provides specific information regarding the tests, tools to help students organize information to effectively answer test questions and tools to help learners develop and use testing skills strategically to maximize outcomes. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

About Blended Training
The blended training allows volunteers to complete the work online at their own pace within the two-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Time Requirements

This training is completed over a three-week period. Part 1 and 3 of the ASE Tutor Training are completed online, where the participants are required to read text material, watch and react to videos, submit blog entries and give feedback to their peers. The online portion is complemented by Part 2 of the training, which is a face-to-face, three-hour, Teaching Strategies workshop, offered on a Thursday evening, May 10th. The Tutor Trainer monitors the participants’ activities and provides feedback as needed.
