DESCRIPTION

This workshop is directed to English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers and tutors who are interested in their students’ health and safety rights and responsibilities at the workplace. Through this presentation, facilitators will help ESL students understand what is safe or unsafe, what the hazards present at their workplace are, and most importantly, how immigrant workers can improve their safety working as a team with management and other resources. We will share a curriculum with lesson plans that include activities such as body maps, role plays and games that acknowledge the challenges on preventing injuries and fostering safer workplaces. This workshop aims not only to raise awareness about student’s responsibilities and protections as new workers in the U.S. but aims to create a network of support that advances safer workplaces.

Natalia Nicastro
Trainer, PhilaPOSH

Natalia Nicastro was born in Argentina and as soon as she came to the U.S. she took ESL classes. She got involved with immigrant rights organizations and connected with PhilaPOSH, an advocacy organization for workers health and safety rights at the workplace. She has reached out to immigrant workers to prevent future injuries and to improve their current working conditions through prevention trainings. She has facilitated Know Your Rights Workshops mostly for construction, restaurant, manufacturing and agricultural workers in community organizations. Through the years, she found that the ESL classroom is a key space for immigrants to raise awareness and trust to become engaged, active and healthier members at their workplaces
