Description
This mini conference will feature four sequential workshops each focused on a specific approach or strategy for helping adult learners succeed on a high school equivalency (HSE) exam.  Topics covered (not necessarily in this order) will be:  data literacy basics, teaching inference across content areas, developing sequencing skills, and making thinking processes visible. Presented by a Daphne Atkinson from GED® Testing Services, the conference is targeted to teachers and tutors who help adult learners prepare for the GED® examination.  Participants are expected to attend all four sessions that day.

Topic 1
Focusing on Data Literacy

Learn strategies to help adult learners enhance their ability to extract information from infographics, charts, tables, graphs and various kinds of data plots and to draw conclusions, make inferences, and determine solutions.  This workshop will introduce data literacy basics and how these skills are a critical stepping stone for all adult learners.

Topic 2
Teaching Inference Across the Content Areas

Whether reading non-fiction text or interpreting graphics, students need to be able to make inferences. Drawing conclusions and making inferences remain two of the most challenging reading skills for students. This session will introduce participants to scaffolding as an approach to teaching inference.. Teachers will work with differentiated strategies for teaching inference in multi-level classrooms and helping learners to  “read between the lines.”

Topic 3
“Knowing” What The Next Step Is:  Developing Sequencing Skills
Sequencing is one of the thinking skills that is assessed across the content areas.  It requires that students engage in logical reasoning, be proficient close readers, and ultimately, be able to understand cause and effect.  Although it may feel different to students in the various content areas, it is all related to the same higher order thinking skill.  We will explore teaching and practicing sequencing from the simple and concrete to the complex and abstract.

Topic 4
Making Thinking Processes Visible: A Key Teaching Strategy Across the Content Areas
One of the best ways to teach higher order thinking skills is to model them; in other words, invite your students to “see” and emulate your thinking processes. The goal is to provide enough practice for them to internalize good thinking skills. This mini-workshop will focus on higher order thinking skills and how content focuses and extends skill development.  The mini-conference is facilitated by Daphne Atkinson, Senior Director, State Relationships, at GED Testing Service®. Ms. Atkinson has spent 19 years in education—seven years with GED Testing Service®; three years as a consultant; and more than nine years at the Graduate Management Admission Council® (GMAC®) as Vice President, Industry Relations.
