The mission of the Philadelphia Adult Literacy Alliance is to support the delivery of quality services to Philadelphia’s adult learners by offering professional development, encouraging collaboration and networking opportunities to adult literacy providers and professionals.

The Alliance meets quarterly and sponsors a year-long variety of opportunities to share and network in-between. We welcome individuals and organizations that are interested in joining The Philadelphia Adult Literacy Alliance.

On Sept. 27, the Philadelphia Adult Literacy Alliance convened for the first Quarterly Meeting of FY18. The Alliance featured special guest Catherine Wolfgang, Director of Workforce Strategies at the Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunitiy. Wolfgang presented an update on the PHL Workforce Strategy, which is being created by the Workforce Development Steering Committee. The group is committed to fueling long-term economic growth through a strategy that ensures ladders of opportunity for all residents. They are working to create pipelines into living wage jobs for youth and young adults, returning citizens and adults needing  literacy and foundation skills. Wolfgang asked for input from the Alliance for ways the Steering Committee could be more inclusive to the needs of adult learners and adult education practitioners. Feedback included making room for undocumented and documented immigrants, single parents, transportation barriers, and mental and physical healthcare issues in the Workforce Strategy. The strategy will be finalized in late November; and will include feedback gathered at the Quarterly Meeting.
