Tutor Now: Fundamentals of Adult Learning Volunteer Training (Online) @ Online
Jan 14 – Feb 4 all-day

Volunteers play an important role in providing educational services to adult learners.  Your volunteer contribution supports the Office of Adult Education mission to ensure that all Philadelphians have access to high-quality education leading to personal and career advancement, and increased economic and social opportunity.

The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one of the FREE tutor trainings offered by the Office of Adult Education. The training is open to everyone – no teaching experience required!  For volunteers who may have teaching experience from K-12 education settings, this training will draw on your existing knowledge and help you prepare to work with adult learners in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language.

Description
The Tutor Now: Fundamentals of Adult Learning training provides tutors with basic skills and strategies for tutoring adult learners. It is designed to ensure that tutors are not only teaching adult basic education skills (Reading, Writing and Numeracy) but also incorporating fundamental skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century workplace such as digital literacy skills. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Help adult learners set achievable goals
  • Lesson planning
  • How to integrate technology into instruction
  • Learner-centered tutoring
  • Formal and informal assessment and how to identify progress
  • Effective communication and facilitation

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older with at least a High School or Equivalency Diploma.
  • The online Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning training is a three-week course and requires participants to complete 12 to 15 hours of online training (4 to 5 hours a week).
  • Completion of all components is required to receive the Office of Education’s Certificate.
  • Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning is a prerequisite for the Tutor Now – GED®/HiSET® Prep Training. 

About Online Training:
Online training allows volunteers to complete the work online at their own pace within the three-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Tutor Now: Technology Skills volunteer training will equip you with tools, skills, and resources to support adults who wish to increase their technology skills. This training is designed with the principles of adult learning theory and technological instruction to suit a wide variety of learners.

In addition, you will be able to:

  • Comprehend the barriers to digital inclusion and the wide variety of learners served in Philadelphia.
  • Understand and Apply adult learning theory and learner-centered strategies to motivate learners.
  • Demonstrate how to locate and access information and resources using technology

About Online Training
Tutor Now: Technology Skills volunteer training is available online only training allows volunteers to complete the work online at their own pace within the two and a half-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older with at least a High School or Equivalency Diploma
  • Tutor Now: Technology Skills is a two-week training and requires 7 to 13 hours to complete (4 to 5 hours a week).
  • Completion of all components is required to receive a Certificate of Completion from the Office of Adult Education.
  • No prerequisites required.

If you are 18 years of age or older with at least a High School or Equivalency Diploma, we invite you to consider becoming a volunteer tutor. The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one of the FREE tutor trainings offered by the Office of Adult Education. The training is open to everyone – no teaching experience required! Tutor Now: GED® and HiSET® Prep training offer tutors the skills to help students achieve success in passing the GED® or HiSET® exams to obtain their Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD). The training provides specific information regarding the tests, tools to help students organize information to effectively answer test questions and tools to help learners develop and use testing skills strategically to maximize outcomes. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

About Online Training
The online training allows volunteers to complete the work online at their own pace within the two-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older with at least a High School or Equivalency Diploma.
  • Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning is a prerequisite for this training.
  • The online Tutor Now, GED® and HiSET® Prep course requires participants to complete 7 to 13 hours of training (4 to 5 hours a week).
  • Volunteers are required to commitment to six-months of volunteer tutoring after being referred to a volunteer partner agency (2 to 3 hours per week).
  • Must have basic computer and Internet skills, with access to a reliable computer and Internet.

  • Completion of all components is required to receive a Certificate of Completion from the Office of Adult Education.

Feb 4 – Feb 18 all-day

Description:

Tutor Now: English as a Second Language (Online) offers theory and techniques specific to tutoring learners for whom English is not the first language, and whose level of literacy in their native language ranges from pre-literate to highly advanced.

Participants will learn:

  • Second language acquisition theory
  • Goals setting and lesson planning
  • Strategies for teaching speaking, listening, reading and writing

Volunteers are required to read material and complete assignments online by the end of the class.

Time Requirements

10 to 13 hours in the span of 3 weeks (4 to 5 hours a week)

Completion of all components is required to receive the Office of Adult Educations Certificate of completion.

Time Requirements

3 face-to-face sessions (8 hours) and complete work online (4 to 7 hours)

About this training:

This training is completed over a three-week time period. The blended training mixes traditional face-to-face classroom facilitated workshops with self-paced online modules. The class meets face-to-face twice. In addition, volunteers are required to read material and complete assignments online by the end of the class.

We have three obligatory face-to-face sessions and online coursework to complete by the end of the class.  Completion of all components is required to receive the Office of Education’s Certificate.
