Tutor Now: English as a Second Language Tutor Training (Online) @ Online Course

Our volunteers are at the heart of our work. In Philadelphia, volunteer adult education tutors serve multitudes of adult students every year providing, mentorship, support and academic guidance. The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one of the FREE tutor trainings offered by the Office of Adult Education. The training is open to everyone – no teaching experience required!  After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia. Description

6-week course 

The Tutor Now: English as a Second Language (Online course) volunteer training course offers theory and techniques specific to tutoring learners for whom English is not the first language, and whose level of literacy in their native language ranges from pre-literate to highly advanced.

Participants will learn:

  • Second language acquisition theory
  • Goals setting and lesson planning
  • Strategies for teaching speaking, listening, reading and writing

Online Training Course
This online training allows volunteers to complete the work online at their own pace within the three-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Tutor Now: GED® / HiSET® Prep (Online)
Mar 8 – Apr 19 all-day

They aid staff, especially adult education teachers, who rely on them to help facilitate lesson plans and hone in on students who benefit from more focused support.

The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one of the FREE tutor trainings offered by the Office of Adult Education. The training is open to everyone – no teaching experience required!  For volunteers who may have teaching experience from K-12 education settings, this training will draw on your existing knowledge and help you prepare to work with adult learners. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia. Click here to learn more about our volunteer program.

DESCRIPTION

The Tutor Now: GED® / HiSET® Prep Training provides volunteers with the knowledge, tools, skills, and resources to support adult learners who are working at a 9th grade + level.   Volunteers will learn tactics to help prepare students to take standardized tests like the GED® or HiSET® in order to obtain a Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma.

This online training is completed over a six-week period.
Completion of all components is required to receive the Office of Education’s Certificate of Completion.

6-week online course

The Tutor Now: Fundamentals of Adult Learning training provides tutors with basic skills and strategies for tutoring adult learners. It is designed to ensure that tutors are not only teaching adult basic education skills (Reading, Writing and Numeracy) but also incorporating fundamental skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century workplace such as digital literacy skills. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Help adult learners set achievable goals
  • Lesson planning
  • How to integrate technology into instruction
  • Learner-centered tutoring
  • Formal and informal assessment and how to identify progress
  • Effective communication and facilitation

Online Training Course
