ONLINE English as a Second Language Tutor Training @ online

Description:
Online English as Second Language (ESL) Tutor Training provides adult literacy volunteers with the tools, skills and resources to support adult English language learners. The ESL Tutor Training adds theory and techniques specific to tutoring learners for whom English is not the first language, and whose level of literacy in their native language ranges from non-literate to highly advanced.

 

About this training:
This training will be delivered and facilitated completely online. It will prepare you to make a difference in someone’s life from the convenience of your home or office. You are expected to read text material, watch and react to videos, submit responses to discussion prompts and quizzes, and provide thoughtful feedback to one another. A tutor trainer will be available to monitor, facilitate the course, and provide feedback as needed. It starts with online coursework the cohort will be required to complete remotely. To successfully complete this training, you should expect to devote 7-8 hours per week on this course.

Completion of all components is required to receive the Office of Adult Educations Certificate of completion.

Tutor Now: Fundamentals of Adult Learning (Online format) @ online

Description:
The Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning training provides tutors with basic skills and strategies for tutoring adult learners. It is designed to ensure that tutors are not only teaching adult basic education skills (Reading, Writing and Numeracy) but also incorporating fundamental skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century workplace such as digital literacy skills. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Help adult learners set achievable goals
  • Lesson planning
  • How to integrate technology into instruction
  • Learner-centered tutoring
  • Formal and informal assessment and how to identify progress
  • Effective communication and facilitation

About Online Trainings:
The online training allows volunteers complete the work online at their own pace within the three-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Completion of all components is required to receive a Certificate of Completion from the Office of Adult Education. Tutor Now, Fundamentals of Adult Learning is a prerequisite for the Tutor Now – GED®/HiSET® Prep Training.

Tutor Now: Technology Skills Training @ online
Aug 27 – Sep 13 all-day

Description:

Tutor Now, Technology Skills. This training is designed for volunteers that are interested in bridging the digital divide through education. Volunteers will be equipped with an understanding of adult learning theory as well as strategies for improving technology skills of adults.  After completion, trained tutors are placed at KEYSPOT open access computing labs and adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.

Participants will learn:

  • the barriers to digital inclusion and the wide variety of learners served in Philadelphia
  • how to apply adult learning theory and learner-centered strategies to motivate learners
  • tips to locate and access information and resources using technology
  • Lesson building and resources

About Online Training:
The online training allows volunteers complete the work online at their own pace within the two and a half-week period. An online facilitator will provide guidance, clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Completion of all components is required to receive a Certificate of Completion from the Office of Adult Education. No prerequisites required.

Mentoring through Reading will discuss and share useful tips on how tutors can use books as a tool not only to improve academic skills and role modeling how an expert reader tackles reading but to support and mentor the learner on the issues that come up on the reading like time management, critical thinking, problem-solving, etc.

If you are 18 years of age or older with at least a High School or Equivalency Diploma, we invite you to consider becoming a volunteer tutor.  The first step to becoming an Adult Education Tutor is to attend one of the FREE tutor trainings offered by the Office of Adult Education.  The training is open to everyone – no teaching experience required!  For volunteers who may have teaching experience from K-12 education settings, this training will draw on your existing knowledge and help you prepare to work with adult learners in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language.

The blended training mixes traditional face-to-face classroom facilitated workshops with self-paced online modules. The class meets face-to-face twice. In addition, volunteers are required to read material and complete assignments online.

Tutor Now, GED® / HiSET® Prep training offer tutors the skills to help students achieve success in passing the GED® or HiSET® exams to obtain their Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD). The training provides specific information regarding the tests, tools to help students organize information to effectively answer test questions and tools to help learners develop and use testing skills strategically to maximize outcomes. After completion, trained tutors are placed at adult education programs throughout Philadelphia.
