Online Basic Tutor Training @ Online

Description:
Online Basic Tutor Training will provide you with the knowledge, tools, skills and resources to support adult learners enrolled in adult basic (ABE), pre-GED® courses and adult secondary education (ASE). The training addresses the different aspects of instruction and support for learners wishing to improve their literacy skills: numeracy, language, and digital.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Use learner-centered tutoring techniques
  • Assess learners and set learner goals
  • Create lesson plans
  • Provide both face-to-face and online instruction
  • Write progress notes.

The training is designed to meet tutor competencies derived from the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Adult Teacher Competencies Project, the Pennsylvania Literacy Corps’ Tutor Competencies, and Pennsylvania Workforce Education standards.

About this training:
This training will be delivered and facilitated completely online. It will prepare you to make a difference in someone’s life from the convenience of your home or office. You are expected to read text material, watch and react to videos, submit responses to discussion prompts and quizzes, and provide thoughtful feedback to one another. A tutor trainer will be available to monitor, facilitate the course, and provide feedback as needed. To successfully complete this training, you are expected to devote seven to eight (7-8) hours per week for three weeks (approximately two [2] hours per day, four days per week).

Description:

(ESL) training offers theory and techniques specific to tutoring learners for whom English is not the first language, and whose level of literacy in their native language ranges from pre-literate to highly advanced.

 Participants will learn:

  • Patterns of immigration in Philadelphia
  • Second language acquisition theory
  • Goals setting and lesson planning
  • Strategies for teaching speaking, listening, reading and writing

The blended training mixes traditional face-to-face classroom facilitated workshops with self-paced online modules. The class meets face-to-face twice. In addition, volunteers are required to read material and complete assignments online.

The Training is designed to meet competencies derived from:

  1. 2008 Standards for ESL/EFL Teachers of Adults, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages
  2. 2003 Standards for adult education ESL programs, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages

About this training:
The blended training mixes traditional face-to-face classroom facilitated workshops with self-paced online modules. The class meets face-to-face twice. In addition, volunteers are required to read material and complete assignments online.

ONLINE GED® / HiSET® Prep Training @ Online
Sep 24 – Oct 8 all-day

Description:

GED® / HiSET® Prep training provides volunteers with the knowledge, tools, skills, and resources to support adult learners who are working at a 9th grade + level.

Participants will learn:

  • Options available in Pennsylvania to obtain a Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma
  • Overview of the Career and College Readiness Standards
  • Test Overview
  • Computer-Based testing essentials
  • Lesson building and resources

About this training:

The online training follows an asynchronous, instructor-facilitated, cohort-based model.  Volunteers can complete the work at their own pace within the two week period. A facilitator is available to offer motivation, provide clarification, support and evaluate the work submitted by potential volunteers.

Completion of all components is required to receive a Certificate of Completion from the Office of Adult Education. Basic Tutor Training is a prerequisite for this training.
