On Saturday, October 24, 2015, Philadelphia’s adult education tutors, teachers, volunteer coordinators, site administrators, and partners will come together for the 2015 Tutor Institute, The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy’s annual adult literacy volunteer conference.  Among the goals of this year’s conference is to provide each attendee with the tools and skills needed to ensure ALL adult learners, regardless of their literacy levels and learning challenges, are supported while they prepare to take  the GED® test, learn English as a Second Language (ESL), enter into post-secondary education and training programs, and advance into family-sustaining jobs.  The one-day conference will include a variety of sessions and an expert panel discussion with in depth strategies and best practices to meet the diverse needs of adult learners.

Education Consultant and Advocate Andrea Lawful-Trainer will deliver the 2015 Tutor Institute Keynote Address.

Andrea Lawful-Trainer is an extraordinary educational consultant who has made broad impact on closing academic achievement gaps across the Delaware Valley.  Her most notable results include providing leadership empowerment for students, leadership development for parents, and professional development for teacher/guidance advisors for a suburban Philadelphia school district that reduced its reading achievement gap from 33 to eight percentage points in six months.  Her proven model places her in partnership with school districts to effectively meet the specific needs of their constituents.  Mrs. Trainer conducts tailored workshops and delivers motivational speeches in a way that engages and empowers.  Demand for services of the organization she founded in 2004, Children and Parental Enrichment Services (C.A.P.E.S) has skyrocketed due to the success of her work.

Her work has led her to do professional development not only for educators in school districts locally and nationally, but also for township officials, police departments and other civil servants. Mrs. Trainer has been honored by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission for outstanding contribution to human relations and human rights in the area of education. She serves as the Chairperson of the Montgomery County Advisory Council of the Commission; Advocate for the National School Board Association; Assistant Regional Director for the Pennsylvania School Board Association and served as the Minority Delegate to the National School Board Association for a one year term in 2012.

Andrea was most recently appointed Chairperson of S.E. Pennsylvania CARES, which is the affiliate to the National CARES mentoring organization spearheaded by Susan L. Taylor. Among her numerous honors and awards she was recognized by Suburban Life Magazine as a “Woman of Power.”  She is a regular contributor to Goodmenproject.com and the only woman contributing writer for B.O.L.D. on techbookonline.com/.

Mrs. Trainer has an undergraduate degree in Communications and a Post Graduate Degree in Education.

“We often find ourselves stumped in what should be otherwise rewarding work and need a boost, to remind us why we are important and a crucial link to the success of others. You will leave inspired and motivated through a series of life affirming stories and strong tips that will help when you begin to question your value.” – Andrea Lawful Trainer
